Emocre: Mega Drive Metroidvania Monster Tamer Blends 16-bit Nostalgia with Emotional Intelligence
São Paulo, Brazil — May 2026 — Solo developer Afonso França de Oliveira today announced that Emocre, his new Monster Tamer / Metroidvania title, is in active development for Mega Drive / Genesis and Steam (PC). The project focuses on turning human emotions into playable creatures through an equilibrium-based battle system rather than defeat, delivering an authentic 16-bit experience with pixel art and a retro soundtrack.
About the Game
In Emocre, the player takes on the role of a protagonist who collapses into a state of emotional catharsis, giving rise to living creatures within their mind: the Emocres. Rather than capturing or destroying them, the player integrates them, making peace with each feeling.
Development prioritized coherence between mechanics and theme: battles are won when the player brings the opponent to equilibrium (the Equilibrium Bar), not to zero HP. Unlike other titles in the genre, the game introduces Harmonization as a Win-State, letting the player treat conflict as a state of imbalance to be adjusted, not eliminated.
The world is split into 8 interconnected areas, each based on a primary emotion from Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions (Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, Trust, Surprise, and Anticipation). By integrating legendary creatures, the player unlocks platforming abilities, such as the Double Jump of Joy, obtained by integrating Ecstasy.
Its stated inspirations are Pokémon, Celeste, Inside Out, and Super Metroid.

Developer Quote
“Emocre was born from a personal experience. I always had trouble identifying my own emotions, and that has a real cost. As I studied the subject more, I understood that this process is part of developing emotional intelligence. This game is an invitation for the player to walk that journey with me. Beyond the fun, there's an intentional psychological layer: you don't integrate an emotion without first recognizing it. The Equilibrium Bar system exists to reinforce that. Here, you don't win by destroying. You win by understanding.” — Afonso França de Oliveira, developer
Design Pillars
1. Emotions as Living Systems
Each emotional state dictates the Emocres' AI patterns, exploration modifiers, and combat opportunity windows. Progression is measured by understanding emotional interactions, not by levels or accumulated resources.
2. Integrate, Don't Destroy
The core loop subverts the classic "win to destroy" trope. Combat success is defined by the ability to recognize limits and apply the right amount of force to bring the opponent to equilibrium — a game ethic built on communication and tactical empathy.
3. Narrative Lived Through Play
The world tells its story through mechanics and environments. Dialogue is a tool for context, not an obstacle. If an emotion matters to the plot, the player engages with it mechanically before reading about it.
